The word ‘Triple Entente’ has a French origin, which means friendship, understanding, and agreement. The triple Entente established a stable relationship between the Russian empire. The French Third Republic and seat Britain was a significant block from the European continent. It was built based upon all the other treaties amongst these three empires.
Basics To Know About Triple Entente
The Franco-Russian alliance from 1894 (between French colonies and Russia), the Entente Cordiale of 1904 between Paris and London, and the Anglo-Russian Entente of 1907 (between Great Britain and Russia). It happened mostly because of the threats to Russia. Also, it was by the ever-expanding Germany and Russia’s weak economic front. It required support from France and the Entente Cordiale for resolving internal disputes.
All of these activities led to the alliance of the three major blocks from the European continent. The treaty of Triple Entente has been more of an opposition to the idea of Triple Alliance. The trio Italy, Germany, and Austria-Hungary made this. The countries involved in Triple Entente entered World War 1 together as allies. And the Triple Alliance then formed the other side of the World War.
Some historians also debate on the importance of this treaty as a triggering factor for the World War. Due to Germany using aggressive tactics and warfare, France and Russia started collaborating through various little treaties and consignments. This mutual understanding further transformed into the formation of Triple Entente. This treaty, unlike the Triple Alliance formed by the major superpowers of Europe. It does not ask the members to wage war for each other. It only had to mention that they were under a ‘moral obligation’. Also, it is to support each other in case of a war.
Since Russia was already threatened by the Austro-Hungarian empire increasing its military strength, Russia offered support and some allegiances to Serbia in case the Triple Alliance countries attacked it. Russia, even though with an enormous workforce, was largely lagging on the financial front. It is why it required France and Britain to support it in case of a war.
During the first world war, Italy was initially on the same side as that of the Triple Alliance. However, since it has always had second thoughts about allying with Austria and Hungary as they had previously conquered some Italian territories, Italy wanted to abandon the Triple Alliance and then join the Triple Entente during the World War.
While doing so, Italy also signed a secret treaty with France. It states that it would not attack France under any circumstances. There are some other promises to Britain and Russia. Based on these secret treaties signed, Italy successfully joined the Triple Entente in the mid-way. Further, it declared war on Austria and Hungary.
When Italy stated neutrality in 1914, the Triple Alliance came to an end. Germany and Austria-Hungary received an ally from the Balkan and the Turkish empire while the Triple Entente gelled with Romania and Italy. The war proceeded into a diplomatic front, and both the treaties came to the back end.
